A Lumbar Hybrid procedure involves the combination of a traditional Lumbar Fusion Procedure and Artificial Disc Replacement. For example, there may be two diseased disc levels in the Lumbar spine with degenerative disease, bone spurs and spinal canal narrowing. The lower level may be worse than the upper level. A fusion would be performed at the lower level with a disc replacement at the upper level to stabilize but preserve motion and decrease stress to the level above. In the past a fusion would have been done at both levels, but with the advent of artificial disc replacement the ability to restore and preserve pain free motion is the main goal.
